Myra Hiatt Kraft was an American philanthropist and the spouse of Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and New England Revolution. She died on July 20, 2011.

The daughter of Frances (Lavine) and Jacob Hiatt, Kraft was born in 1942 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Her father was a Jewish immigrant from Lithuania who worked as a circuit judge for the Court of Lithuania before leaving for the United States in 1935. During the Holocaust, his parents and three other family members were killed.

He later rose to prominence as a philanthropist and Jewish community leader. When the E.F. Dodge Paper Box Corp. in Leominster, Massachusetts joined with 12 other box and printing businesses to form the Rand-Whitney Corp., Jacob continued to serve as the company’s president. In 1972, Robert Kraft, his son-in-law, acquired Rand-Whitney.

Kraft earned her diploma from the exclusive Bancroft School in Worcester in 1960 and a history degree from Brandeis University in 1964.

The doctor, who is now 47, graduated from medical school in 2000. She completed her medical education at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and holds a board certification in ophthalmology she is also an expert in glaucoma and eye care.

She previously held the position of associate professor of ophthalmology at Columbia University in New York City before joining the team at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia.

The couple’s surroundings suggested that they might stay together for a while.

Robert Kraft Philanthropy

One of Boston Magazine’s 20 Most Powerful Women in Boston, Kraft was classified as such. She served as a trustee for the Robert K. and Myra H. Kraft Foundation as well as president and director of the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation. She served on the boards of the American Repertory Theatre, the Jewish Book Council, Brandeis University, Northeastern University, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, and the United Way of Massachusetts Bay.

She and her husband gave millions of dollars to help establish the Israeli Football League and build the Kraft Stadium in Jerusalem, promoting American football in Israel. Kraft has contributed to the funding and support of the Israeli Women’s National Flag Football Team.

With the help of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Boston, Kraft and her husband established the “Passport to Israel” Program, which gave Jewish parents financial support to send their youngsters to Israel to support their Jewish identity. The Kraft-Hiatt Chair in Christian Studies at Brandeis University and the Kraft-Hiatt Chair in Judaic Studies at the College of the Holy Cross were endowed by Kraft, her husband, and her father to promote greater understanding between Christians and Jews.

The Boston Globe said Kraft was “forging a completely new style of active giving,” while the International Herald Tribune credited her with “modeling a new form of engaged giving that is altering the relationship between benefactor and philanthropy.”

The Krafts have given more than $100 million to a variety of charities, primarily those that support Israel, women’s concerns, sports, and education.

In order to support humanitarian and philanthropic organizations across the United States and Israel, the Kraft family established the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation, which Kraft served as president.

Soon after the 1996 NFL Draft, Kraft discovered that Nebraska’s Christian Peter, the Patriots’ fifth-round pick, had a long history of assaulting women. The Patriots gave up Peter’s rights a week after the draught at her urging and in response to protests against Peter’s signing from women’s organizations and Patriots supporters.

While still a Brandeis student in June 1963, Kraft married Robert Kraft. Their four sons are:

Robert Kraft Death

At the age of 68, Kraft passed away from ovarian cancer in her Brookline, Massachusetts, home on July 20, 2011. In Newton, Massachusetts, Temple Emanuel hosted public services. All Patriots players wore a patch with Kraft’s initials (MHK) on their uniforms the whole 2011 season as a tribute to her.
