Altered Carbon Season 3: It Will Be Renewed or Not?

Based on Richard K. Morgan’s novel of the same name, Netflix’s ambitious cyberpunk thriller Altered Carbon took years to bring to life. But Altered Carbon finally came out on Netflix in February 2018 with a 10-episode first season after its big budget was locked and loaded, letting the show’s creators go all out with crazy sci-fi.

Altered Carbon, which is set in an alternate reality where people have found a way to digitize their minds, was quickly picked up for a second season by the streaming service. The first season only aired a few months ago, but viewers quickly realized that the show was worth the wait. Fans have been wondering if there will be a third season of Altered Carbon since the second season came out on Netflix in February 2020.

There has been no news about the third season of Altered Carbon. But after the end of season 2, there are still a lot of questions that could be answered in a third chapter of the Altered Carbon universe, where the dead don’t stay dead. First of all, in the last episode of season 2, some of the show’s most important characters were killed off without much sympathy.

This is similar to how HBO’s fantasy drama Game of Thrones often killed off important characters without much regret. Better yet, are the main characters’ stacks really gone, or will they come back like they usually do on TV if only their sleeves were hurt?

So many questions will remain until Netflix adds a new set of episodes. Until then, people will argue about them. Here’s what we know so far about what the third season of Altered Carbon might look like and how it might feel.

Release Date

Netflix hasn’t officially said when season 3 of Altered Carbon will be out, so there is no date set yet. But there are a few pieces of information that can be used to put a jigsaw puzzle together.

The first season of the show Altered Carbon came out on Netflix on February 2, 2018. The second season came out on TV on February 27, 2020. A spin-off anime called Altered Carbon: Resleeved came out on March 19, 2020. It’s hard to guess how Netflix feels about the cost-to-benefit ratio of any of its properties.

Since Netflix is notoriously secretive about its viewership numbers, the only information that can be used to make guesses about a release date is the high cost of making the series. Netflix has been a little less strict about cancelling shows lately, so Altered Carbon will need to have a lot of viewers for season 2 if they want to keep it going.

But with the release of the anime spin-off, it looks like the company is committed to the original IP, so maybe Altered Carbon’s father will win.

In any case, fans shouldn’t think that Netflix’s silence is a sign of bad things to come. Five months after season 1 ended, the company didn’t order season 2, so fans shouldn’t start writing obituaries until July.

If Altered Carbon is picked up for a third season, it won’t be on Netflix until early 2022. It’s not fun to think that you’ll have to wait two years for a season that you’ll probably watch all at once or in a few days, but Altered Carbon season 3 should be worth the wait. In the meantime, you can watch the second chapter again, go back to the first one, or check out the universe of the spin-offs.

No one has said anything about who might be in Altered Carbon season 3 yet, and the show’s creators haven’t even hinted at any possible casting choices. But it seems like Edgar Poe, the humanoid AI played by Chris Conner, made a copy of O.G. Kovacs (Byron Mann) before his stack was destroyed. In an interview with IGN, showrunner Alison Schapker said this was true.

“We all loved the end of Season 1, when Kovacs gave Elias Ryker’s sleeve back to Ortega. Then, all you saw was these boots walking out of the elevator, and you were like, ‘I think Kovacs is coming back, but in what sleeve?'” Schapker says that. “We wanted to keep that promise to the audience in season 2.

We also liked the idea of Poe, who has been getting worse all season, having his own moment of heroism in which he acts like Kovacs and basically sacrifices himself. So, his stack and Takeshi Kovacs’ mind are there, and that’s what we promised the audience. But we’ll have to wait and see what she has planned.

Everyone hopes that Anthony Mackie, who played Kovacs in the second season of Altered Carbon, will be back for the third season. Since Mackie took over for Joel Kinnaman after the first season, it’s unlikely that the writers will let him come back if they keep rewriting each season.

There may be flashbacks, though, in which Mackie shows up. Also, the actor told The Hollywood Reporter that he isn’t ready to leave Altered Carbon: “I hope to be able to bring Kovacs back next season. I’m not sure if I’m ready for [the series to end].”

Will Yun Lee, who plays “Kovacs Prime,” is expected to return for season 3 as the other Takeshi Kovacs. Chris Conner, who plays Poe, Renée Elise Goldsberry, who plays Quellcrist Falconer, Simone Missick, who plays bounty hunter Trepp, and Dina Shihabi, who plays Dig 301, are also expected to return. It’s not clear if Dichen Lachman, who plays Reileen Kawahara, Kovacs’ sister, will come back. There will be new characters in Season 3 of Altered Carbon, maybe even a new Takeshi Kovacs.

Some people on the deepest parts of the internet think that Zazie Beetz, who played the Joker and Deadpool 2’s Vanessa, could be cast as the next Takeshi Kovacs sleeve. All of the rumours seem to come from an interview with series creator Laeta Kalogridis in 2018.

She told The Wrap, “The idea that this kind of technology creates interesting intersections between your idea of your physical self and your idea of your inner or spiritual self, or your idea of being fluid in some way, certainly the idea of reassigning your gender becomes a whole lot easier if you don’t have to do it surgically.

Things do change, at the very least. You are still living in a body that wasn’t yours when you were born. And I don’t think we’ve even begun to scratch the surface of the idea of being able to make a new physical self.”

Even though it makes sense for Kovacs to be a woman instead of a man, fans shouldn’t call Beetz an official member of the Altered Carbon season 3 cast until they hear it from a reliable news source.

As for what would happen in a possible third season of Altered Carbon, your guess is just as good as Schapker’s. Schapker told The Hollywood Reporter in early March 2020, “I have some wishes, but we’re waiting for official confirmation from Netflix. There is no pickup truck in our family. We are only here for a short time. I really want a third season. I have a lot of ideas about where to go, but I’m not sure how much I can say about them. But we’re good to go!

Altered Carbon season 2 has a lot of big mysteries that haven’t been solved yet. The most important one is what happened to Kovacs and his sister Reileen. Everyone would love to see Mackie back on the show, no matter what character he’s playing. This isn’t impossible if the show’s creators decide to bring back the well-liked actor.

As there may be more sleeves that look like Mackie, they may write his character into a script. Even though there will be a lot of questions and rumours until season 3 is officially announced, we do know that what’s dead doesn’t always stay dead, as long as the stack is okay.
