Black Widow Release Date: What Is the Storyline of the Movie?
It took a long time for Black Widow to get her movie. The 24th MCU movie is ready to go, but it has been held up a few times because the Covid-19 pandemic is still affecting movie releases worldwide.
Black Widow now has a new time to launch. The movie can’t have any more problems, or Marvel’s whole Phase 4 plan will be thrown off, so Black Widow needs to show up sooner rather than later. We also know if it will come out in theaters and on Disney Plus simultaneously, and we have a few other new bits of information.
You don’t need to look further for news about this MCU movie. Read on to find out everything you need to know about Black Widow’s own story.
The Release Date for Black Widow
The new release date for the Black Widow movie is July 9, 2021. The film wasn’t supposed to come out until May 2020, but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, that date was pushed back to May 7, 2021. This made 2020 the first year since 2009 without a new Marvel movie, but Disney and Marvel don’t want to go two years without a new MCU movie.
Deadline reported that Disney C.E.O. Bob Chapek said in February that the company planned to keep Black Widow‘s May 7 release date (opens in new tab). But those plans have changed since then, even though movie theater chains have started to open in the U.S. From late April on, U.K. theaters should be open again, but the money made in those two countries wouldn’t be enough to cover the costs of creating and promoting Black Widow.
Realistically, movie fans worldwide need to see Black Widow in theaters for Marvel Studios and Disney to make money. Since the pandemic is still going strong in many places, it’s unlikely that mainland Europe and South America theaters will open soon.
More people have been asking for Black Widow to be added to Disney Plus in the past few weeks. Will it be added to the streaming service? Continue reading to find out if that’s true.
Black Widow: Will it be on Disney Plus?
Yes. We’ve already talked about how Black Widow will come out simultaneously on Disney Plus and in theaters. As we’ve already said, some parts of the world won’t have theaters open by July 9, so it makes sense for Disney to finally give in and give Black Widow the go-ahead for its streaming platform.
This release does come with a catch, though. Black Widow won’t be on Disney Plus Premier Access until July 9, just like Raya and the Last Dragon and Mulan were. That means that anyone who wants to watch Black Widow will have to pay an extra fee on top of what they already pay for their subscription.
We don’t know how much it will cost right now. We expect Black Widow to do the same since Raya and Mulan are on Premier Access for USD 29.99/GBP £19.99/$34.99/E.U.R. €21.99 per movie. If it costs more than that, customers won’t be happy, even if they’d like to get it within a week or two of the launch date.
There is also no timetable for when Black Widow will be free to watch on Disney Plus. Mulan was sent to all subscribers three months after it came out, so Black Widow might do the same. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the next MCU movie, and it’s set to come out in September 2021.
However, since Black Widow is a prequel, you don’t have to watch it before Shang-Chi. So, don’t be surprised if you can’t watch Black Widow for free on Disney Plus before at least October. We think that, but if Disney makes an official announcement before the movie comes out, we’ll change this.
Trailer for Black Widow
You can watch the last Black Widow trailer up top. It’s the latest in a series of reveals that started at the 2020 Super Bowl and went on from there.
So far, the teaser footage has told us that the Taskmaster wants to use the Red Room, where Natasha was trained, to control agents. The final trailer shows us more about this plan.
The first trailer starts with a montage of Romanoff staring into a mirror and scenes from other MCU movies. This is meant to show that the movie’s central theme is family. “I had nothing before. I got this job, though. These people. She says, “But nothing lasts forever.”
We also see Romanoff meet Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross again, played by William Hurt. This is where the Russian agent might be persuaded to defect to the United States. Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, is an agent with skills similar to Black Widow. Romanoff calls her “sis.” Biological sisters, or spiritual? We’ll have to see what happens.
In the special look trailer, we can see that Black Widow has to deal with her past by going up against a new type of assassin, or as she calls them, “a new world of Widows.” Natasha hints in the first trailer at the “mistakes” she made before joining S.H.I.E.L.D., and this army of assassins seems to be the result of those “mistakes.” This appears to be Natasha’s main story arc.
The Cast of Black Widow
Here is a list of all the characters who have been confirmed to be in Black Widow so far:
- Scarlett Johansson plays Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.
- Florence Pugh plays Yelena Belova
- Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff
- David Harbour as Red Guardian/Alexei Shostakov
- Rick Mason played by O.T. Magbenie
- William Hurt played Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.
- Dreykov, played by Ray Winstone
Rachel Weisz, who won an Oscar, plays Melina, a Russian spy named Iron Maiden, and is a bad guy in the comics. Yelena, played by Florence Pugh, took over as the Black Widow after Natasha Romanoff in the books.
David Harbour, known for his roles in “Stranger Things” and “Hellboy,” plays Alexie Shostakov, also known as “Red Guardian.” He is Russia’s version of Captain America, a super-soldier, though, in the movie, he looks a little out of shape.
Hurt, who plays Ross, and Ray Winstone, who plays General Dreykov, round out the main cast. A Disinsider report says that this character is the Head of the Red Room, so it will be interesting to see how Romanoff and Dreykov interact if they meet.
Director of Black Widow
With Cate Shortland at the helm, the Black Widow movie is the first MCU film to be led by a woman by herself. The studio interviewed more than 70 filmmakers before choosing a well-known Australian director.
Shortland is known for movies like Berlin Syndrome (2017), Lore (2012), and Somersault (2004). She uses the script for Blacklist by Jac Schaeffer to give Natasha Romanoff a decisive moment.
What Do We Know About the Black Widow Story?
Not too much. After all, Marvel is a studio known for not giving away too much about the story. But since Black Widow is such a popular character and most MCU movies get sequels, we can’t help but wonder if this will be an excuse to bring Natasha Romanoff back into the Marvel universe, like how Endgame gave Tom Hiddleston’s Loki a way to come back.
In an interview with Total Film, Johansson said, “One of the main ideas of the movie is family.” What is a family? How does it define us? How does our past define us? How does our family, however we define it, make us who we are, for better or worse? What we know about Widow’s past will change how we saw her in the MCU before. It also sounds like the movie will switch from the usual action-packed superhero stuff to family drama, which is a good sign.
We’ve also heard that Florence Pugh will be in the Hawkeye series on Disney Plus, so that this movie could set Belova up for more roles in the MCU. That rumor came from Variety in December 2020, but there haven’t been any leaks about Pugh from that production set.
