Dark Winds Season 2: When It Will Be Renewed?
Over the years, AMC has become a haven for TV fans, putting out some of the best shows on TV right now. Of course, 2022 hasn’t shown any signs of running out of things to do, and a show like Dark Winds can’t be undervalued for what it could be.
This American psychological thriller was made by Graham Roland and is based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman. It premiered on Sunday, June 12, 2022, on the channel and its streaming service, AMC+.
Since then, it’s easy to care about the story of Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. But it’s already that time. Will Dark Winds have a second season?
Are Dark Winds Renewed for Season 2?
Yes, without a doubt. AMC has already confirmed that Dark Winds will return for a second season.
The news came out before the first season was even over.
As of this writing, the finale, called HózhóoNaasháa, has not yet come out. It will do so on Sunday, July 17, 2022.
We can rest easy knowing that the sixth installment won’t be the last one, but the release date for the next season hasn’t been set yet. Even so, it’s great to know that Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon will be back in their leading roles shortly.
AMC is Happy to Bring Back Dark Winds
Variety wrote about the good news in June, noting that the successful premiere of Dark Winds on AMC got a massive 2.2 million viewers in the Nielsen Live+3 ratings.
With results like those, it’s not surprising that Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, is optimistic about the show’s bright future:

McDermott said he was “overwhelmed with gratitude to [the] entire production team, and a special thanks to executive producers Robert Redford, George RR Martin, Chris Eyre, and, of course, Zahn McClarnon, who also leads the cast and brings humanity, authority, and the wisdom of a life well lived to everything he does.

The people at AMC aren’t only happy about a new favorite show getting off to a good start.
Some Dark Winds fans have also taken to Twitter to say how much they love the show and how happy they are that it has already been renewed and that people have faith in it.
When Will “Dark Winds” Season 2 Start?
As of this writing, there is no official date for the start of Season 2 of Dark Winds, but Deadline says that AMC has given the show the go-ahead for another six-episode run that will air sometime next year. The show was renewed because its premiere on June 12 had 2.2 million viewers, which made it the “No. 5 cable drama premiere of the current season” and the “No. 1 new series launch in AMC+ history.”
“HózhóoNaasháa,” the last episode of Dark Winds, will air on AMC on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at 9 p.m. EST.
There Will Be Six Episodes in the Next Season of “Dark Winds.”
Season 2 of Dark Winds will have six episodes. McClarnon will be back as Leaphorn, a police officer for the Navajo Nation. He is a new deputy who works with Leaphorn to look into a series of crimes that don’t seem to be related. Chee is played by Kiowa Gordon.
There are more than two dozen books in the Leaphorn and Chee series, so there is much to draw ideas from. Season 1 is mainly based on Hillerman’s books Listening Woman from 1978 and People of Darkness from 1980. So far, we don’t know which book or books season 2 might be based on.

It Took 30 Years for the Show to Make It to the Big Screen
Robert Redford, an actor, and the director, is one of the show’s executive producers. Since 1986, he has been adapting Hillerman’s books for TV or the big screen. (He was in the movie The Dark Wind from 1991 and the PBS show Skinwalkers from the early 2000s, where Chee and Leaphorn had roles.) From the page to the screen, Dark Winds took a long time.
George R.R. Martin, who wrote “Game of Thrones,” is also a producer on “Dark Winds.” He knew Hillerman, who died in 2008, and jumped at the chance to work with Redford.

He told The Hollywood Reporter, “These are books I liked.” “If I could help get them on the big screen and introduce a whole new generation of people to the work of Tony Hillerman and this world… Yeah. I was happy to join.
Dark Winds has a cast that is primarily Native American, a crew that is mostly Native American (85%), and a writing staff that is all Native American. Production happens at Camel Rock Studios in New Mexico, the first movie and TV studio owned by Native Americans. McClarnon, who is Lakota, thinks a lot about all of these things.
“I hope Dark Winds will give new crew and talent even more opportunities,” he said. “The networks may give Native showrunners more chances, and let us tell our own stories… We’re getting a chance at last.”

Dark Winds Season 2 Plot
The following season will probably start where the first season’s last episode, HózhóoNaasháa, which came out on July 17, 2022, left off. The attack was written by Maya Rose Dittloff and directed by Chris Eyre and Sanford Bookstaver. The episode’s official description says, “Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito go to where the Buffalo Society is hiding, only to be faced with hard choices that could change the rest of their lives.

So, it is likely that the pilot episode of Dark Winds Season 2 will be based on this already-proven premise. It’s also said that the first episode of the next season will pick up on any possible cliffhangers and subplots and jump right into this world with more experiments, giving fans something new to watch instead of the same old themes. So, getting fans to stream the show is essential for the network to make the best content and plot while putting these well-known characters first.
