Walt Disney Animation Studios produced the American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy film Frozen III in 2024. The 63rd Disney animated movie was created by Paul Briggs, with Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee directing and Jennifer Lee writing the screenplay.
Marc E. Smith and Allison Schroeder collaborated on the writing of the tale. It is the third instalment in the Frozen series and the sequel to the 2019 film Frozen II. The reprised voices of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, Ciarán Hinds, Sterling K. Brown, and Martha Plimpton are joined by Paul Dano, Olivia Wilde, Casey Affleck, and Gregory Diaz IV.
The story follows Anna, Elsa, and their family as they get caught in a time loop and eventually find themselves in contemporary Chicago, Illinois. In order to blend in and avoid being seen by the sheriff of the Chicago Police Department, who is attempting to determine Elsa’s source of magic, they receive assistance from a well-known modeller there.
Will Frozen 3 Happen?
Frozen 2 has generally received favourable reviews and even broke an animated film box office record on its opening day in November. But even if Frozen 2 surpasses the success of the first movie at the box office, one of the co-directors has hinted that a third instalment is unlikely to be made. In addition to stating that she is “tired,” Jennifer Lee told Yahoo Movies that “for me [finishing Frozen 2] felt final.”
Chris Buck believes that Frozen and Frozen 2 work as one large movie, but similarly teased Frozen 3 by saying “nothing ever closes the door.” Nevertheless, as a glimmer of hope, Lee recently said that “we always say ‘never say never.'” If Frozen 2 is regarded as another commercial and critical success for Disney, it seems likely that the cast will come together, at some point, for a third instalment.
Frozen 3’s Release Date
About 16 months after Frozen’s premiere, in March 2015, Frozen 2 was formally announced. Since Frozen 2 does seem to be the end of the story, it is unlikely that Disney will rush to approve Frozen 3 in the future. Years will be needed for pre-production and animation if Lee is moved to write a new chapter (or if Disney hires another writer to do so). Given the six-year wait for Frozen 2, a similar release schedule would place the premiere of Frozen 3 around 2025.

Frozen 3 Cast
Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell have both expressed a desire to return as Anna and Elsa in a third Frozen movie. Similarly, there’s a chance that we’ll see Jonathan Groff (as Kristoff and Sven) and Josh Gad (as Olaf) again. It’s safe to assume that everyone else involved would be open to a return engagement since Gad has already reprised his role as Olaf in the web series At Home with Olaf.
The other cast members, including Mattias (Sterling K. Brown), Ryder (Jason Ritter), Honeymaren (Rachel Matthews), and Pabbie (Ciarán Hinds), the leader of the Rock Trolls, are also very likely to return. Evan Rachel Wood and Alfred Molina, who we first met in flashbacks in the first movie as Anna and Elsa’s parents Iduna and Agnarr, are likely to appear more frequently in Frozen 2. Up until Disney makes the third movie official, all of these castings are pure speculation.

Frozen 3’s Story

Frozen 2 is unusual in that it doesn’t have a true antagonist and instead centres on a quest to discover Elsa’s power source and reveal the secrets of Arendelle’s past. It does, however, go to great lengths to repeatedly bring up Prince Hans, the evil character in the movie Frozen. He is mentioned in conversation between Anna and Kristoff and during a game of charades. Olaf plays the part of Hans during his summary of the Frozen plot, and later, when Elsa is exploring Ahtohallan, we see Hans in an icy form.

A new villain could sabotage the harmonious give-and-take dynamic between the two lands now that Anna is in charge as Queen of Arendelle and Elsa is in charge of the Enchanted Forest. Given Hans’ cunning, he could probably find a way to return and cause trouble for the sisters. Frozen 3 might complete the circle by bringing Hans back, or it might skip ahead in time and focus on either Anna or Elsa’s offspring.
