Hard Cell plot
When Catherine Tate writes Hard Cell, she tries to be both funny and serious about the prison system at the same time. As if it were a real documentary, “Hard Cell” takes place in a fictional female prison called “HMP Woldsley.”
A writer and a creator Catherine plays a lot of different people in the movie, from Governor Laura Willis, who thinks that creativity leads to rehabilitation, to Big Viv, who has been a psychopath his whole life. Over the course of six weeks, the inmates work on a musical directed by a former EastEnders star, Cheryl Fergison, who now runs the prison.
Rehearsals bring together an eclectic group of women as they find their voices, gain more self-confidence, and build stronger friendships during the show, too. Even though Hard Cell is a lot of fun, it also makes you think about how funny prison life is.
“A documentary crew follows the inmates and staff of HMP Woldsley to show how the prison system can be both brutal and funny.”
Kristian Smith, the show’s executive producer, says: “We can’t wait to show people on Netflix the inside of HMP Woldsley, the fictional prison where Catherine Tate’s characters are kept in our show. This show is both funny and heartbreaking at the same time. It shows what life might be like in a British women’s prison.”
