James Morosini does love his dad, and when his dad calls while we are talking, he shows it. Morosini picks up the phone and says he’s in the middle of an interview. The younger Morosini says, “I’ll call you back,” and then adds, “Love you.”
Morosini’s new, well-reviewed film, “I Love My Dad,” is about how hard it is for a father and son to get along. The film won the grand jury prize and the audience award at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival.
Patton Oswalt plays Chuck, a man whose son Franklin (played by Morosini) cuts him off, so he makes a social media profile for a waitress he knows named Becca (Claudia Sulewski.) Even though Chuck wants to talk to Franklin, his son falls hard for Becca, and Chuck has to do more complicated things to keep up the lie.
People usually laugh or wince when they hear the premise, and sometimes they do both. It’s a fine line, but Morosini’s excellent script and direction and a great cast that includes Amy Landecker, Lil Rel Howery, and Rachel Dratch keep it going.

It’s also based on a real story: Morosini’s father sent him a friend request pretending to be a beautiful young woman. Even though it has some awkward (but funny) scenes, it’s also surprising how much it cares about all of its complicated characters.
Morosini says that running “I Love My Dad” was “the hardest thing I’ve ever done” but that it was also “the most rewarding.” the 32-year-old actor was most recently seen in “The Sex Life of College Girls.” Before that, he directed the 2018 comedy “Threesomething,” which he says cost “around $10,000” to make.

Most of the movie was shot in Syracuse, New York, and was finished in June 2021. I Love My Dad was shown for the first time at South by Southwest on March 12, 2022, and it got great reviews. The film won many prizes at the Austin-based festival, including the Grand Jury Prize for Narrative Feature and the Narrative Feature Competition Audience Award. I Love My Dad also won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature at the Chicago Critics Film Festival and the Best Feature Film award at the Hill Country Film Festival.
