Jean Batiste and Estella Batiste are his mother and father. They were the proprietors of a grocery and hardware business in New Orleans’ 9th Ward. He is one of Batiste’s seven brothers, and he is the youngest of the group.

Jon began performing with the Batiste Brothers Band when he was eight years old, playing percussion and drums. He switched from drums to the piano when he was eleven years old on his mother’s advice.
He learned to play the piano by taking classical music classes, which he did for a while.

The musician attended St Augustine High School before moving to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, where he studied with Trombone Shorty. He received his bachelor’s degree in 2004. Later on, he enrolled at the Juilliard School, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2013.  Afterward, he was awarded a Master of Music degree.
