Reviews

Kotaro Lives Alone began with numerous disadvantages, which may explain why I had such a hard time returning to it after giving it a try in the Preview Guide. The rigid animation and “unique” character designs of Kotaro do not appeal to my aesthetic sensibilities. In addition, regardless of the medium, stories about exceptionally brilliant and independent children are tough to accomplish.

I must confess, though, that I’m glad I gave Kotaro Lives Alone a second chance, as it turned out to be a very well-written and emotional drama that deals with significant social concerns. A worse programme would probably utilise Kotaro’s living alone as an easy excuse for comedic antics.

My greatest concern prior to seeing the episode was that it would use the title character’s living situation as a source of broad humour, but I could not have been more wrong. In the course of the series’ ten episodes, it becomes clear why this bizarrely adorable child is living alone, and it’s not funny.

Almost every member of the cast of Kotaro Lives Alone have this quality. Aside from a few characters, the majority of men, women, and children in this drama are dealing with challenging situations. This anime deals with child abuse, neglect, post-traumatic stress disorder, systemic poverty, and more without giving anything away.

It is never so bleak that it forgets to incorporate humour and happy moments to lift the audience’s spirits, but yet. Given the show’s concentration on exposing the telltale signs of a child who has been mistreated, I can’t help but wonder if the creator, Mami Tsumura, has a background in social work or early childhood education.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Karino Adopt Kotaro?

Kotaro’s condition slowly improves after Karino becomes his guardian. As the narrative progresses, Kotaro finally weeps and sulks like any other child, his innocence and curiosity regaining vigour as he adopts Karino as his family.

Is Kotaro Lives Alone a Story of Tragedy?

Kotaro Lives Alone is at times happy and amusing, and at other times extremely sad and lonely. Because he is presented as so unyielding, it is startling and heartbreaking when Kotaro feels weak (which is actually him simply acting like a 4-year-old should).
