Early life

Jordan was born on April 29, 1955, in Chattanooga, Tennessee and raised there. He attended Brainerd High School. Jordan described his mother, Peggy Ann Jordan (née Griffin; 1935-2022), as accepting and supportive, despite never truly understanding him. Allen Bernard Jordan, Jordan’s father, was a major in the United States Army Reserve when he died, along with two others, in the crash of a civilian Beechcraft Debonair plane at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, on March 31, 1967, when Jordan was almost 12 years old. Jordan stated in a 2014 interview that growing up as a Southern Baptist was difficult for him. “I’ve been baptised 14 times.” Whenever the preacher said, ‘Come forward, sinners!’ ‘Oh, I was out in the woods with that boy,’ I’d say.

Jordan moved to Los Angeles in 1982 and became involved with drugs and alcohol, as well as being arrested several times. He began journaling on a daily basis, which aided his recovery from drug and alcohol abuse. Jordan told Wendy Williams, a talk show host, in 2010 that he had been sober for 13 years. In the same appearance, Jordan revealed that before quitting drinking, he shared a cell with Robert Downey Jr., and that when they both appeared later on Ally McBeal, Downey couldn’t quite place where they had met previously. He was out and proudly gay. Jordan became involved in AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) as a buddy and as a food delivery person for Project Angel Food early in the AIDS crisis.
