Peaky Blinders Season 7: When Will the Movie Come Out?

Peaky Blinders was originally planned to run for seven seasons, with Tommy Shelby’s final redemption arc taking place in Season 7. “[Season 7] will tell a different story, where Tommy Shelby—who begins as this nihilistic, only looking out for his family person—will be redeemed, and he will become good,” creator Steven Knight stated in 2019.

Season 6 concludes with a small moment of redemption for Tommy, who rides away on a white horse, in contrast to the first time we see him, astride a black horse in the first episode.

Tommy’s redemption, on the other hand, is only partially realised, with the final season forcing him into an uneasy and seemingly committed alliance with England’s fascist party, the same year Hitler was appointed Führer of Germany. (Because Oswald Mosley married Diana Freeman-Mitford in 1936, the series’ timeline is somewhat premature; Tommy sees a newspaper clipping of the marriage in 1934.)

While Tommy can see his previous life burn as he gallops away, one gets the impression that his final act is not yet complete. The Second World War is rapidly approaching, and Churchill will be confronted by a rising fascist tide sweeping Europe. Tommy, who is still a member of parliament, will have to exorcise one more demon before he can rest: Mosley.

That necessity appears to be causing more Peaky Blinders. And, while there will be no Season 7, we are not finished with Tommy Shelby.

Will there Be a Peaky Blinders Movie?

All indications point to “yes.”

In a panel discussion at the BFI London Film Festival, series creator Steven Knight stated that the film will begin production in 2023. “I’m going to write the feature film, which will be set and shot in Birmingham,” Knight explained. “And that will almost certainly be the end of Peaky Blinders as we know it.”

Peaky Blinders Season 7

By “the end of Peaky Blinders,” Knight means the end of Thomas Shelby’s involvement in the franchise as well as his own. He did say there might be “shows related” (he dislikes the term “spin-off”), but they’d be in a different direction; Knight prefers to “pass on the baton.” That is, shows set in the same universe as the original series but without the characters.

When Will the Movie Come Out?

It’s too early to set a release date. If filming begins next year, the release date will most likely be delayed for another calendar year.

A conservative estimate places the film in early 2024.

What Will the Peaky Blinders Movie Be About?

Knight explained where the film will fit into the timeline to Digital Spy.

“We’re going to make a film – a feature film – that will move the world forward, and then we’ll see where that takes us once we’ve moved the world forward into the Second World [War].”

That means the film will most likely take place before Hitler invades Poland in 1939. It’s unclear how far the film’s war events will go. Knight’s final line about seeing what happens after the war is most likely a reference to future franchises.

For the time being, we can expect the film to take place between 1934 and the early 1940s.

Who Will Appear in the Film?

As with plot details, we don’t know much about the cast, but Knight has confirmed that Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Tommy, as well as Paul Anderson as his brother Arthur.

Peaky Blinders Season 7

When asked if the two actors would return to the Peaky universe of possible spin-offs, he told Digital Spy, “It is currently impossible to say. But the movie—yes.” He continued, “There are so many people, so many great actors, with whom we are already in conversation for the film and whatever comes after. But I believe what we want to do is continue to surprise people and discover new talent. Because it’s all out there, and there’s some consistency—what we’re doing is finding really good actors from a working-class background and telling that story. That’s what we’re aiming for.”

Conclusion

Peaky Blinders was supposed to run for seven seasons. Tommy Shelby was forced into an uneasy and seemingly committed alliance with England’s fascist party during the final season, the same year Hitler was appointed Führer of Germany. According to creator Steven Knight, there may be “shows related” (he dislikes the term “spin-off”), but they will go in a different direction. It will take place between 1934 and the early 1940s, most likely before WWII. According to Knight, it is impossible to predict whether the actors will return to the Peaky Blakers universe.
