Why was the show cancelled by Fox?
At least one show had to be kept between Empire and Star, Fox’s CEO Charlie Collier acknowledged in an interview with Deadline. Empire, which was in the midst of its sixth and final season, had taken precedence over Star when it was decided to cancel it.
For Collier, the decision to terminate the musical drama was a difficult one. In spite of this, they wanted to give Empire a proper farewell.
Collier, speaking on behalf of Fox in a press conference, explains that they weighed their options. Empire’s new time slot was a challenge for them because Star was always the show’s lead out, according to him. In addition, they had to choose between Star and Empire because they did not have a 10 p.m. time slot.
In all honesty, the cancellation of Star was not a surprise. Many new dramas have recently been acquired by Fox. Ratings were solid for the musical drama Star, but it didn’t get the attention it deserved. In addition, the show’s production costs are astronomical.
The international distribution of Star has been extremely challenging. The cancellation of Season 4 of Star was the only consequence of this.
