Star Trek Lower Decks Season 2: When It Will Be Released?
Star Trek: Lower Decks will be back this summer for its much-anticipated third season, but before we see what the U.S.S. Cerritos has been up to, there’s a new Blu-ray and DVD for Season 2 that we can use to catch up. The two-disc collection comes out on July 12 and has more than an hour of extras that go into more detail about what happens on the Cerritos and the crew that keeps the show going.
Star Trek Season 2 Cast
Lower Decks is its own thing in the Star Trek universe. It doesn’t focus on the usual space heroes like Spock, Captain Kirk, or Captain Picard. Instead, it focuses on the “lower deckers” who do the tedious work on Starfleet ships while the cool people like Spock, Kirk, and Picard do the cool things.
The people on the unimportant Cerritos, who are the lowest of the low-deckers, are the show’s focus. Mike McMahan, who created Solar Opposites and wrote for Rick and Morty, is behind the mask.
Our four “heroes,” played by Tawny Newsome as Beckett Mariner, Jack Quaid as Brad Boiler, Eugene Cordero as Samantha Rutherford, and Nol Wells as D’Vana Tendi, lead a strong cast. Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, Gillian Vigman, Paul Scheer, and Carl Tart will be there.
Season 2 makes the show even better by building on many things that made the first season a hit. Since Boiler is now a crew member on the U.S.S. Titan, there are more references and cameos for Trek fans. This sets the stage for a new adventure. Season 2 also has some special guests. Jonathan Frakes, Lycia Naff from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Jeffrey Combs from Deep Space Nine are among them.
Star Trek Season 2 Plot
Aside from the ten half-hour episodes, the Blu-ray and DVD of Lower Decks have a variety of extras for fans of the show, such as featurettes, audio commentaries, and more. In “A Sound Foundation,” viewers go to the sound department behind the scenes to see how the show’s sounds are made.
This has been a big part of the show’s success. For the episode “No Small Parts,” the show was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Sound Editing. The other feature is called “Lower Dictionary: Season Two.” It is a collection of interviews with the show’s cast and crew about how hard it was to write the characters’ stories for the second season.
Also included are audio commentaries for episodes 2, 5, 7, and 9. McMahan, Newsome, Quaid, Frakes, and others from the cast and crew are on hand for each one. Fans also got an animatic and a rundown of all the easter eggs in each episode so they could catch every little reference.
Star Trek Season 2 Release Date
Lower Decks is made by McMahan, Alex Kurtzman, Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth for Roddenberry Entertainment, Katie Krentz for 219 Entertainment, and Alex Kurtzman and Aaron Baiers for Secret Hideout. You can stream the series on Paramount+, but on Friday, August 13, you can buy the DVD and Blu-ray to get the whole experience, including a closer look at how the series works.
The Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 Trailer Shows That the Cerritos Crew Has a Lot to Lose
As part of their panel at Star Trek: Mission Chicago, Star Trek: Lower Decks showed a first look at Season 3 today. Star Trek: Mission Chicago is a three-day event for Star Trek fans full of exclusive panels and reveals the hugely popular and always-growing sci-fi franchise.
Star Trek: Lower Decks, which started in 2019 and is about the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos who live on the lower decks, will only be available to stream on Paramount+ when its third season starts later this year.
The teaser trailer is vague, but it does show the cliffhanger ending of Season 2. It ends with the lower decks crew of the Cerritos—Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), Ensign Tendi (Nol Wells), and Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero)—planning to steal the Cerritos, which promises more of the comedy the show is known
Star Trek has become something of a family affair for O’Connell. His wife, Rebecca Romijn, will play First Officer Una Chin-Riley (aka “Number One”) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which will start airing in May. Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis), Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O’Connell), and Doctor T’Ana, who work on the bridge of the Cerritos, are also likely to be there for this third adventure (Gillian Vigman).
