Is the Movie Hustle Based on a True Story?

Hustle, the new Adam Sandler movie on Netflix, is based on a lot of real events. Sandler plays Stanley Sugarman, a basketball scout for the real Philadelphia 76ers, in the movie co-produced by LeBron James.

Throughout the movie, there are many NBA stars, like former players Shaquille O’Neal, Allen Iverson, Julius Irving, and Kenny Smith, and current players Tobias Harris, Tyrese Maxey, and Seth Curry.

In the movie, Sandler plays the desperate Sugarman, who is trying to make something of his newest recruit, Bo Cruz (Juancho Hernández).

He gives another convincing dramatic performance, which makes the movie feel even more real. But did the story in Hustle really happen?

Is the Movie Hustle Based on a True Story?

Even though there are dozens of sports cameos in the movie, the story of Stanley Sugarman and Bo Cruz is completely made up.

But there are a lot of things about the movie that makes it feel real, like the fact that both the director, Jeremiah Zagar, and the writer, Will Fetters, are from Philadelphia.

Is the Movie Hustle Based on a True Story

Sandler said on the film’s red carpet that Zagar wanted to make the movie as Philadelphia as possible.

That meant using current 76ers player Tobias Harris and the team’s head coach, Doc Rivers, in the movie and filming in South Philly, Center City, and the Italian Market, three of the city’s most famous neighborhoods.

A lot of the movie was also filmed at the Wells Fargo Center, where the real 76ers play.

Sandler’s love of basketball is well-known, and it’s clear that he wanted to make a movie that was as true to life as possible. The story may not be true, but a lot of the details are.
