What Happened to Wrexham

In 2011, Wrexham was close to going out of business, and a supporters’ trust took over. The trust’s 2,000 members voted overwhelmingly in favor of giving Reynolds and McElhenney control of the team. According to The Athletic, 98% of the football club’s trust was happy to provide power to the funny men.

At the time of the sale, Spencer Harris, one of the trust’s leading members, told The Athletic, “In the year 2020, it’s a fascinating story. There’s been so much bad news about people dying, families not being able to see each other, and people worrying about their jobs, but this is like a ray of sunshine.

It’s a nice story, that’s all. But it will feel like death for me because I’ve spent so much time with the club, leaving a big hole in my life. I don’t think they’ll need my help or advice, but I’ll always be there for them if they do.”

Before they bought Wrexham together, they had never met in person. This was McElhenney’s idea.

Welcome to Wrexham

“I was in the shower when I thought, ‘You know, he’s very business-minded. I wonder if he’d be interested in joining me as a full partner since he could make this thing known much more,'” McElhenney said. “I got out of the shower and asked Kaitlin, “What if I ask Ryan to be a full partner? Do you think he would?” She said, “I guess that depends on whether or not your ego can handle sharing the screen with Ryan Reynolds.”
