What Else Duff McKagan Bought

In 1994, McKagan decided to invest his first $100,000 in the stock market. Since he grew up in Seattle, he chose three companies there. He chose Starbucks, Amazon, and Microsoft as the stocks he would buy. Over the years, Duff has been brilliant about his bought and sold stocks.

Stock Holdings

As Duff’s body healed and his mind cleared, he used what he had learned about money to look into Guns N’ Roses’ profits and losses. He quickly figured out that Guns N’ Roses’ money was being handled better than many other bands of the same time but that the band was losing a lot of money on tours to promote album sales.

He discovered that going on tour was called a “loss leader” because it helped sell CDs. Duff was one of the first musicians to realize that he could flip that equation and make a lot more money by selling tickets and t-shirts. He also got sponsors for the tour and started VIP of sale packages and other things that made money for the band.

Each band member got an equal amount of the money the band made. Now that Duff wasn’t spending his money on drugs and alcohol, he had a lot of extra cash. In 1994, he invested his first $100,000 in the stock market. Since he grew up in Seattle, he chose three companies there. He decided on these stocks:

  • Starbucks
  • Amazon
  • Microsoft

It’s not clear how many shares he still owns today, but if those were his FIRST stock choices, Duff has likely been an astute investor over the years.
