Judd, Naomi was a singer and actress from the United States. In 1983, she and her daughter Wynonna founded The Judds, a tremendously popular country music combo that won five Grammy Honors and nine Country Music Association awards.
While Wynonna continued to perform as a solo singer, she occasionally reunited with her mother for concerts as The Judds when Naomi was stricken with hepatitis in 1991. Naomi has struggled with mental health difficulties her entire life.
Early Life of Naomi Judd
Judd was born on January 11, 1946, in Ashland, Kentucky, to Pauline Ruth “Polly” (née Oliver) and Charles Glen Judd. Her father was the owner of a petrol station. At the age of 17, her brother Brian died of leukemia; Naomi Judd’s first child, Christina Claire Ciminella (later Wynonna Judd), was born when Judd was 18. Her first child was given the surname Ciminella after Michael Ciminella, the man Judd married abruptly after being dumped by her boyfriend and Wynonna’s biological father, Charles Jordan.
Judd raised both daughters as single parents after the birth of her second daughter, Ashley (1968), who later became a film and stage actress, and the end of her marriage to Ciminella. She first attended nursing school at California’s College of Marin while living in nearby Lagunitas, California, and later began a successful singing career with her daughter Wynonna.
When she reverted to her maiden name after her divorce, she also changed her name, Diana, which she did not think fit “her own spiritual, rural Kentucky conception of her true heritage,” and decided to pay homage to the Biblical figure Naomi, finding resonance in her story of moving to another land and eventually being left without a husband raising two women.

Death of Naomi Judd
Judd died by suicide on April 30, 2022, at the age of 76, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at her home in Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee. She had long struggled with despair, anxiety, panic attacks, and suicidal thoughts. The medications she was provided, including lithium, caused adverse effects such as facial edema, baldness, and tremors, which added to her emotional suffering.
Her daughters announced her death via Twitter: “Today was a tragic day for our sisters. Our lovely mother succumbed to the disease of mental illness.” Ashley Judd revealed the cause of her mother’s death in an interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America on May 12, 2022. She made the admission in the hopes of raising awareness about mental illness and assisting those who are affected by it. She also stated that she and the rest of the family preferred to learn about the method of death from firsthand sources.

Judd’s memorial service was shown on CMT. Naomi Judd: A River of Time Celebration, hosted by Robin Roberts, was televised from the Ryman Auditorium, as requested by Judd before her death.
