New York-born musician, actor, and rapper Sean John Combs is better known by his stage name, P Diddy. Before starting his own label, Bad Boy Entertainment, he first rose to prominence in the role of talent director at Uptown Records.
Early Life
Sean John Combs was born on November 4, 1969, in Harlem, New York City. After his father was murdered in his car on Central Park West when Combs was just two years old, he was raised by relatives in Mount Vernon, New York. Combs earned his diploma from the Roman Catholic school Mouth Saint Michael in 1987. He enrolled at Howard University with the intent of studying business but dropped out during his second year.
Career
Combs began his career in the music industry in New York at Uptown Records, where he worked as a talent director. But in 1993 he was let go from Uptown and he and The Notorious B.I.G. launched their own record company, Bad Boy Entertainment.
Slowly but surely, he began bringing in more and more popular acts like Usher, Lil Kim, TLC, and Aretha Franklin to record for the company.
Combs changed his professional name to Puff Daddy in 1997, the same year his breakthrough hit, “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down,” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
His debut album, titled “No Way Out,” was published by Bad Boy Records on July 1, 1997. This album was a huge success, selling over 561,000 copies in its first week and landing him five nominations for the 40th Annual Grammy Awards.

P. Diddy is Combs’ new stage moniker, which he adopted in 2005. Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power featured Combs in a starring role. He was named one of 2005’s most influential persons and hosted the MTV Video Music Awards.
