All of “SNL’s” new cast members from 1985 were let go after the show’s dismal ratings in the 1985–1986 season. Substance abuse derailed Downey’s career. He had several drug-related arrests between 1996 and 2001. On separate occasions, he was caught with illegal substances like cocaine and heroin, in addition to marijuana.
He tried several times to get sober through drug treatment facilities, but always ended up back on drugs. While racing down Sunset Boulevard in April1996, Downey suddenly pulled over. Police discovered heroin, cocaine, and an unloaded.357 Magnum handgun in his possession.
He ended up in jail. About a month after his parole was up, Downey broke into a neighbor’s house and slept in one of the beds there while high on something. He received three years of probation during which he must submit to random drug tests. In 1997, he went to jail for six months in L.A. County because he failed one of his mandatory drug tests.
After two years, he was arrested once more for failing another drug test. Again, he was sent to the California State Prison and Substance Abuse Treatment Facility for a three-year term. After nearly a year in a facility for substance abuse treatment, he was able to post $5,000 bail and be released from jail.
He was only out of jail for a week before being welcomed into the “Ally McBeal” family. For his work in this, he was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film. On the Thanksgiving weekend of 2000, police found Downey drunk and in possession of cocaine and Valium.
In April of 2001, an LAPD officer discovered Downey wandering around Culver City without shoes. He was detained because of a possible drug influence. He tested positive for cocaine, but he was released from jail a few hours later. He lost his job on “Ally McBeal” after his arrest. He was placed on three years of probation and remanded to drug treatment.
His Career Back on Track
After overcoming his drug addiction, Downey had to work hard to get his career back on track. Because the insurance agencies used by productions placed an unreasonable value on Downey, he was unhirable.
It was Downey’s friend and collaborator on “Air America,” Mel Gibson, who helped launch the second half of Downey’s career. On his own dime, he covered Downey’s “The Singing Detective” insurance bond. After Downey finished filming without any hiccups, he was quickly hired by other directors.
Then, in 2007, he was cast as Tony Stark in “Iron Man,” a role he has since called “the role of a lifetime.” In the spring of 2008, the first Iron Man movie was released. Downey’s performance in Iron Man garnered rave reviews. In addition to “The Incredible Hulk” (2008), he also appeared in the 2010 and 2013 “Iron Man” sequels.
Films: “The Avengers” (2012), “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).
Downey also had a supporting role in the comedy Tropic Thunder, for which he received an Oscar nomination. In the same year, Downey was cast as another well-known character when he was chosen to play Sherlock Holmes in the film of the same name.
Both “Sherlock Holmes” (2011) and “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (2011) featured him as the famous fictional detective, and a third film featuring him as Holmes is currently scheduled for release in late December 2021.

Personal Life
On May 29, 1992, Downey married actress and singer Deborah Falconer after a 42-day courtship. In 2001, Downey’s drug abuse and multiple trips to treatment ruined his marriage. Falconer left Downey, taking their 1993-born son Indio with her. In 2004, Downey and Falconer divorced.
In 2003, Downey met film executive Susan Levin on the shooting of “Gothika.” She refused down his date request twice. Eventually, she could no longer ignore their shared chemistry. In November 2003, Downey proposed to Levin the night before her 30th birthday. The couple wed in 2005. In February of 2012, they welcomed their son Exton.
