On August 27, 1961, Thomas Carlyle Ford, best known by his stage name Tom Ford, was born in Austin, Texas. His parents, Thomas David Ford and Shirley Burton (formerly Shirley Ann Thrasher) were both real estate agents. He spent his formative years in Texas, where he was raised in Houston’s suburbs as well as in San Marcos, a city outside of Austin. The family then relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, when he was eleven years old. In 1979, he received his diploma from Santa Fe Preparatory School. He then relocated to New York City with the intention of enrolling at New York University to study art history, but he left after just a year to concentrate on developing his acting career, particularly in television commercials.
Later, he enrolled at Parsons the New School for Design to study interior architecture. After serving as an intern in Chloé’s press office in Paris during his final year at Parsons, he changed his major to fashion but ultimately received an architecture degree. Ford persisted in applying for jobs in the fashion industry after graduation despite not having a degree in fashion and having little prior experience working in the industry. His persistence paid off, as he was eventually hired by American fashion designer Cathy Hardwick, where he spent the next two years working as her design assistant. In 1988, he relocated to the company Perry Ellis and spent the next two years there. However, he made the decision to work in Europe after deciding he wanted a change of pace. He relocated to Milan after being hired by Gucci as the company’s top women’s ready-to-wear designer in an effort to save the faltering fashion firm.
Ford’s career and influence grew quickly at Gucci. He signed menswear after only six months of employment there, and shortly after that, he started designing shoes. Richard Lambertson eventually departed the company, and Ford eventually took over as design director in 1992. He was in charge of managing the brand’s ready-to-wear, perfumes, image, advertising, and store design in this new position. Ford was in charge of creating 11 different product lines in 1993 alone! Ford has worked as a fashion designer for a long time, but he has also directed a number of films. In March 2005, he established his own motion picture production firm, Fade to Black. Richard was a journalist who formerly served as Vogue Hommes International’s editor in chief. Alexander John “Jack” Buckley Ford, their son, was born to them through gestational surrogacy in 2012. At the unfortunate age of 71, Richard passed away in September 2021.
