Tulsi Gabbard is an American politician, United States Army Reserve officer, and political pundit who represented Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district from 2013 to 2021. Gabbard was born on April 12, 1981, in Leloaloa, Maoptasi County, on the main island of Tutuila, American Samoa. Carol (née Porter) Gabbard and her husband, Mike Gabbard, had five children, with her being the fourth. Gabbard’s family relocated to Hawaii, where they had lived since the late 1970s when she was two years old in 1983.

Gabbard was reared in a multicultural environment and is of Samoan and European origin. Her mother was born in Indiana and spent her childhood in Michigan. Her father was born in American Samoa and grew up in Hawaii and Florida; he has Samoan and European ancestors.

Gabbard’s 2020 presidential campaign’s domestic policy program was economically and socially progressive. She agreed with Republicans on certain cultural and social issues after the presidential race.

Personal Life

Gabbard is vegan and practices Gaudiya Vaishnavism as a Hindu. She calls herself a karma yogi.  She regards the Bhagavad Gita as a spiritual guide and took the oath of office in 2013 using her personal copy, which she presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 2014 visit to the United States.

She married Eduardo Tamayo in 2002.
