A Look at Kobe Bryant and Vanessa’s Family
Vanessa and Kobe got married in 2001 and were together for 19 years. At the time, Kobe’s parents, agent, and sisters reportedly turned down the invitation. Vanessa was 19 and still a senior in high school, so that was the reason.
Things changed, though, when she had her first of four kids in 2003.
Natalia Diamante Bryant, who is 19, is their oldest child.
Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant, who died, Bianka Bella Bryant, 5, and Capri Kobe Bryant were also their children.
Early Life
Vanessa Laine was born in Los Angeles on May 5, 1982. Vanessa Cornejo Urbieta was her real name at birth. She comes from Mexico and has a sister named Sophie who is older than her. Bryant’s parents split up when she was still a baby. Her mother later remarried Stephen Laine.

After she got married, Bryant started calling herself Vanessa Laine. In 2000, she changed her name to Vanessa Laine for good. She lived in Huntington Beach with her step-grandfather Robert Laine, where she went to Marina High School.
Career Beginnings
In August 1999, Bryant and her friend Rowena were at an Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre hip hop concert when they were approached by a company that wanted to hire them as extras in music videos. Bryant later appeared in music videos for Snoop Dogg and Krayzie Bone, among others.
Bryant met her future husband Kobe on the set of the music video for Tha Eastsidaz’s “G’d Up.” Soon, the relationship got a lot of attention from the media and messed up Vanessa’s high school life. She did her senior year at home by studying on her own.
Marriage to Kobe Bryant
Six months after they met, Vanessa and Kobe Bryant got engaged. In the spring of 2001, they got married in Dana Point, California. About two years later, at the beginning of 2003, they had their first child, a daughter named Natalia. In the summer of that year, a 19-year-old worker at a hotel where Kobe Bryant had stayed filed a sexual assault case against him. Even though Vanessa defended him, she admitted that he had been unfaithful. A few days later, Kobe gave her an eight-carat, $4 million purple diamond ring.
During the first few years of their marriage, Vanessa got a lot of attention from tabloids and other news outlets, especially after she said that Los Angeles Lakers player Karl Malone had behaved badly toward her. But she was also liked because she stood up to the NBA’s culture of sexual promiscuity.

Vanessa got more attention in 2005 when she lost a pregnancy because of an ectopic pregnancy. The next year, she and Kobe had Gianna, their second child. Later, in December 2011, Vanessa filed for divorce from her husband because they couldn’t get along. However, in early 2013, they decided not to go through with the divorce. In December 2016, the Bryants had their third daughter, Bianka. In 2019, their fourth and last child, a daughter named Capri, was born.
Philanthropy
In 2007, Kobe and Vanessa Bryant started a charity called VIVO, which was later changed to the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Foundation. It is a worldwide charity that works to give college scholarships to minority college students and other young people who don’t get enough attention. The Bryants also did other good things together. For example, they helped start the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.
Vanessa Bryant works alone, but she has teamed up with the non-profit group Baby2Baby to help poor women and children. In late 2021, the group gave her a philanthropy award for her work. Bryant’s other big charity work is with the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, which was started by her husband to help needy child athletes. She started a line of clothes in honor of her daughter Gianna through the organization.
Granity Studios
Bryant is the president and CEO of Granity Studios, a multimedia production company that her husband started in 2013. This is just one of the things she does. “Dear Basketball,” an animated short film that won an Oscar in 2017, was made by this company. Kobe Bryant has also written a number of books for young adults, such as the “Wizard” and “Epoca” series, which have been published by Granity Studios.
Kobe Bryant Death and Lawsuit
In Calabasas, California, in January 2020, Kobe Bryant and his second-oldest daughter Gianna died in a helicopter crash. As a result of the crash, Vanessa sued Los Angeles County for invasion of privacy and negligence because pictures of the crash were taken and then shared. In August 2022, she got $16 million in compensation for the lawsuit. Vanessa plans to give the money to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation.
