Gabrielle Union is reflecting with a mix of humor and regret on the very first big purchase she made after achieving fame in Hollywood. During a panel at the American Black Film Festival in Miami on Thursday, June 12, the 52-year-old actress candidly shared what she did with her initial sizeable paycheck from the cult classic Bring It On, the 2000 cheerleading comedy that propelled her career.
In a live discussion moderated by Kelley L. Carter titled “Sisterhood & Savings: A Conversation with Gabrielle Union,” the Being MaryJane star confessed that her first major purchase wasn’t the smartest financial decision. “So stupid,” she admitted, referring to the impulsive car she bought more than twenty years ago, despite her father’s warnings. “I went on the Mazda lot. I’m like, ‘Oh, I’ve made it when I have a Mazda.’”

Union recalled her father’s caution: “Don’t buy a brand-new car,” he advised. “It depreciates the second you drive it off the lot.” Yet, like many young stars enjoying newfound success, she chose to disregard this wisdom.
“I walked into Mazda and I bought myself a black-on-black Mazda Miata with leather seats,” she revealed, also highlighting the physical discomfort it caused. “Let me tell you about leather seats in Los Angeles,” she laughed. “Do you know I scorched myself every time I got out?”
Union acknowledged the car’s immediate depreciation but viewed the purchase as a memorable milestone in her journey as a rising star.
Over time, Gabrielle Union and her husband, retired NBA champion Dwyane Wade, have been open about their finances, using their platforms to promote honest conversations about money, legacy, and long-term financial planning. While her first purchase may have left more than a dent in her bank account, Union’s story serves as a lighthearted reminder that every glamorous career starts with a few rookie errors.

This disclosure comes shortly after Union publicly shared her husband Dwyane Wade’s recent cancer diagnosis, a deeply personal experience intended to raise awareness and garner support. “Obviously, him getting that diagnosis was traumatic for him, you know, being faced with your own mortality in your early 40s,” she said. “You’re like, ‘Am I going to be here to see my family? Who am I without this big life? Without this healthy body?’ But you also don’t understand the journey and the toll it takes on your marriage, on your family, on your kids.”
Despite these challenges, Union approaches life with openness, humor, and compassion. Whether reflecting on financial missteps or confronting the toughest battles alongside her husband, the actress remains a compelling voice for vulnerability, growth, and resilience both on screen and in real life.
