- Ellen DeGeneres Slammed as ‘Petty’ and ‘Mean’ After Margaret Cho’s Claims
Ellen DeGeneres is encountering renewed criticism regarding her alleged off-camera conduct, this time from fellow comedian Margaret Cho, who spoke candidly in a recent interview. Cho criticized the former daytime television star during an appearance on “The Kelly Mantle Show,” describing DeGeneres as “really weird and not nice” throughout their many years working in comedy.
These remarks contribute to the mounting disapproval that has trailed DeGeneres since her talk show concluded in 2022 amid allegations of fostering a toxic work atmosphere.
“Ellen was really weird and not nice to me for most of my career,” Cho shared, reminiscing about their early years as stand-up comics in the 1980s. “I opened for her in the 1980s when she was the headliner at comedy clubs… long before her widespread fame.”

The star of “All-American Girl” expressed surprise at Ellen’s demeanor when they reconnected on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in the 2000s. “She acted as if we had just met. I was like, ‘B-tch, what?’ That felt weird. We go way back,” Cho recounted, labeling the exchange as “creepy and strange.”
Cho also recounted a particularly frustrating incident involving music legend David Bowie. She claims Bowie spoke highly of her during a taping of The Ellen DeGeneres Show after noticing her in the audience at one of his concerts, where she wore an eye-catching Chinese emperor costume. However, according to Cho, Ellen removed the entire segment from the broadcast.
“He was genuinely excited and spoke about it extensively… but she cut it from the show, which made me very upset,” Cho said, revealing a producer friend had to inform her. “He loves you. God said your name,” she was told.
Despite this, the segment never aired. “Maybe it was due to timing,” Cho added. “But regardless, I took it personally.”

Now 67, DeGeneres has kept a low profile since her show’s cancellation, recently admitting during a comedy set that she felt she had been “kicked out of show business” for being “mean,” which sharply contrasts the beloved “Queen of Nice” persona she once portrayed.
Supporters have rallied behind Cho following the interview, with one fan describing Ellen as “Petty. Jealous. Mean.” Another commented, “Good riddance to Ellen. England is stuck with her now.” A third bluntly stated, “She rivals Rosie O’Donnell in the not-nice department.”
Neither Ellen nor her representatives have publicly addressed Cho’s recent accusations.
